Enjoy Freedom and Flexibility with Contact Lenses

While we love a stylish pair of frames, we know that glasses aren’t always the perfect fit for every moment. Contact lenses offer a sense of freedom that’s hard to beat. They move with your eyes to provide a natural field of vision, making them a fantastic lifestyle choice for work, play, and everything in between.

Whether you’re an athlete looking for an unobstructed peripheral view, someone who wants to show off their eye makeup, or you’re just tired of your lenses fogging up when you step indoors on a cold Ontario day, contacts provide a convenient, “barely-there” alternative.

If you’re interested in trying contact lenses for the first time or updating your existing prescription, we’re here to assist. Book your appointment today.

Why a Contact Lens Fitting is Essential

You might wonder why you need a specific exam for contacts if you already have a glasses prescription. Your contact lens prescription is different from your glasses prescription, as the lenses sit directly on your eye.

Because every eye is shaped differently, much like a fingerprint, a professional fitting makes sure your lenses provide crisp, clear vision without causing irritation. Beyond comfort, these exams are vital for monitoring your long-term eye health, ensuring the lenses allow enough oxygen to reach your cornea and preventing potential infections or dryness.

What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Exam

Your journey to clear vision starts with a comprehensive eye exam to assess your overall eye health and determine your visual acuity (a simple measure of how clearly you can see details at a specific distance).

Once the health check is complete, we dive into the contact lens-specific portion. We use the Topcon MYAH to map the unique curvature of your eye’s surface for a precise fit. We also measure your pupil and iris so the lens sits perfectly centred.

During your contact lens exam, we’ll chat about your daily routine, such as whether you work long hours at a computer or spend your weekends outdoors, to select the lens style that matches your needs.

Your contact lens fitting will include practice and training to insert and remove your lenses. Once you’re feeling comfortable with the lenses, you can go home and trial the pair for a week. Our team will schedule you for a follow-up with Dr. Arora in about a week to check in on how the lenses feel.

Caring for Your Eyes and Your Lenses

Proper contact lens maintenance is the secret to happy, healthy eyes. During your appointment, we’ll instruct you on how to care for your new lenses to maintain good hygiene and prevent infections. If you are a first-time wearer, we provide one-on-one training to make sure you’re a pro at inserting and removing your lenses before you leave our clinic.

Top tips for safe wear include:

  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching your lenses.
  • Never use tap water to rinse lenses; only use the recommended contact lens solution.
  • Don’t shower, swim, or use a hot tub while wearing contact lenses.
  • Replace your lens case every three months to prevent bacterial buildup.
  • Stick to the schedule provided by your optometrist when replacing lenses. Never “over-wear” disposable lenses.

Specialized Lens Options We Offer

Technology has come a long way, meaning almost anyone can wear contacts comfortably. We offer a variety of specialized designs to address specific vision needs:

  • Aspheric Lenses: Designed to provide crisper vision, especially for those with corneal abnormalities, such as astigmatism.
  • Toric Lenses: Specifically weighted and shaped to correct astigmatism.
  • Multifocal Lenses: Perfect for those who need help seeing both near and far without reaching for reading glasses.
  • Myopia Control Lenses: Specialized soft lenses designed to help slow down the progression of nearsightedness in growing eyes.
  • Ortho-K (Orthokeratology): Unique lenses worn only while you sleep that gently reshape the eye so you can see clearly all day without glasses or daytime contacts.

Is Your Child Ready for Contact Lenses?

You may be wondering what the “magic age” is for a child to start wearing contacts. At Arora Optometry, we believe there isn’t one. Instead, we take an individualized approach based on maturity rather than the number of candles on a birthday cake.

We sit down with both the parent and the child to discuss the responsibilities involved. Is your child motivated to wear them? Do they follow a hygiene routine (like brushing their teeth) without being reminded?

If a child is ready to take ownership of the care and handling of their lenses, they can be a great candidate. Contacts can be a massive boost for a child’s self-esteem and a game-changer for school sports. We also have a few myopia management options specific to contact lenses.
