Correct Your Vision Overnight

Ortho-k, or orthokeratology, is the use of specially designed contact lenses that are worn overnight. During wear, they gently reshape the cornea to improve visual clarity throughout the day. Vision improvements are reversible, but can be maintained through routine use.

At Arora Optometry, we provide fittings for customized ortho-k lenses for both children and adults. Ortho-k lenses can be used as part of a myopia management plan for kids, or as an alternative to surgery for adults interested in having clear vision without wearing glasses and contacts throughout the day.

If you’re interested in trying ortho-k lenses, book an appointment for a comprehensive exam today.

How Does Ortho-k Work?

Ortho-k lenses are primarily used to correct myopia, or nearsightedness. In individuals with myopia, light that enters the eye is focused in front of the retina, rather than directly on it. This causes distant objects to appear blurry.

Myopia is usually caused by either an eye that is too long or a cornea that is curved too steeply. The cornea is the clear dome that covers the iris of your eye. Ortho-k lenses aim to reshape the cornea in such a way that light is focused directly onto the retina, so your vision is clear. They are worn overnight, then removed in the morning for lens-free vision during the day.

Ortho-k for Myopia Management

Children with myopia often experience rapid changes to their prescription. As their eyes grow, their vision can worsen, making their prescription higher with each annual eye exam.

Ortho-k lenses have been shown to slow the progression of myopia in children by about 50% compared to standard single vision glasses or contact lenses. They can be an effective tool within your child’s myopia management plan.

We recommend ortho-k for active children, especially, as the freedom to go lens-free means there are no concerns about glasses or contact lenses during sports games, dance performances, or swimming lessons. As a bonus, they wear their ortho-k lenses overnight, meaning you’ll be able to supervise the insertion, removal, and duration of the treatment while they’re at home.

Ortho-k lenses can also be a great option for kids and teenagers who are self-conscious about wearing glasses, as their entire treatment is completed at home, so they don’t have anything to worry about at school.

Ortho-k for Adults

For adults with myopia, ortho-k lenses can also be a great option. While myopia doesn’t typically progress in adults the same way that it does in children, ortho-k lenses still provide a vision correction option to adults whose vision has stabilized.

If you’re interested in going glasses and contact lens-free throughout the day, but not sure about pursuing laser vision correction surgery, ortho-k lenses provide a unique alternative. They work the same way in adults as in children, worn overnight to gently reshape your cornea to give you clear vision throughout the day.

Ortho-k lenses are fitted similarly to other contact lenses. We will take thorough measurements of your eyes and calculate a unique prescription that will achieve clear vision. It can take around 2 weeks for you to attain the maximum vision correction that your ortho-k lenses provide.

During your fitting, we’ll discuss how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses. We’ll also follow up to make sure your lenses are providing you with clear vision.

Is Ortho-k Right for Me?

To determine if ortho-k lenses are the right vision correction option for you or your child, you’ll first need to book an eye exam. We’ll examine your eye health, check your prescription, and discuss the routine and your expectations for wearing ortho-k lenses.

After this discussion, you can decide whether you want to explore ortho-k. From there, we can measure your eyes and prepare your new lenses. Once your lenses are ready, we’ll book a fitting and walk you through all the important information you need to know to keep your eyes healthy and achieve clear vision.
